Every writer needs time off.
The WGA has always been good about this. They understand writers and other creatives need to recharge their batteries once in a while. If they don’t, the work suffers.
How much time off do we need?
It’s different for everybody.
For some, the traditional work week makes sense, with two days off out of every seven. (For example, staff writers on the late-night talk shows. They also get at least two week’s vacation every year (unless they’re striking).)
For others, working for years straight and then taking one afternoon off is preferable. (For example, Isaac Asimov.)
I need about a day a month, but I keep it loose, and take a day off when I feel like I need it.
How often do you need a break?
I can take a day off when I'm dead! A lot of days off! Actually, I take a day when I need it, but like a lot of people, it's hard to really turn the brain off. Even when I'm taking a day off I'll still jot down ideas or funny comments. I don't know what feels better -- recharging by turning it all off for a day or the sense of accomplishment of writing something good. I think I'll take a day off and ponder this.
