Why does the world seem to hate Taylor Swift?
We make fun of her dating life and personal relationships. We make fun of her music. Things reached a fevered pitch during the Super Bowl when we got mad at her for going to a football game with her boyfriend.
The worst people can say about her is that she’s ambitious and business-minded. Her personal life is no different or more dramatic than anyone else, especially not a showbiz personality. On that scale, she’s on the mild side.
Here are some important facts about Taylor Swift:
She works hard.
She sells millions of albums.
She’s a business and marketing genius, ranked #1 this year on Billboard’s list of the top 100 music executives.
She’s won the Album of the Year Grammy four times.
She’s a self-made billionaire.
She’s won just about every country music award there is.
She uses her platform to promote political causes she cares about.
She’s a philanthropist who’s donated millions to charity.
She treats her fans better than any celebrity in the history of entertainment.
By any measure, she’s one of the top performing artists of all time, beloved by hundreds of millions of people around the world. She doesn’t deserve the hate and ridicule she gets. She deserves—at the very least—everyone’s respect and admiration.
Prediction: when we’re old, we’re going to brag that we were around to witness her rise to stardom, and we’re going to be embarrassed that we didn’t go to her concerts when we had the chance.
If you feel a knee-jerk desire to pile on the bandwagon and make fun of Taylor Swift, think twice. Better to study what she does and learn from it.
I remember doing Jerry Corleys excellent online stand up course and he told us that while a lot of comics Scoff at acts like Jeff Dunham and Carrot top, we have to remember that those guys are household names and we aren't (yet)
No shame in my Taylor game. I love her! Her music is fine, whatever, but regardless of what you think of the music, her story is incredible.
