I hear you, Scott. Good choice. About a month ago, I decided to make one Substack post a month only for paying subscribers. All the others that month are free. I’m liking this approach and deciding which one will have the premium info or comics is fun.
Very helpful to hear your thoughts on this given all your years of experience and recent experiment with paywall tips. Brand over business. Makes sense and feels better to me to try to apply as a creative person.
As an artist, I'm under that wonderful sword of Domacles where I use Substack to get my work seen, but it would be great to also get paid for all my hard work. This lead me to making most of my posts free while trying to sell books of my work. It was working for a bit then i suspect Substack now has algorithms in place that limit accounts with more free posts than paid, because my subscriber number have hit a wall. Or maybe its a combo of Substack audience vs. my refusal to lock my comic work in to any one particular topic?
I am in not much of a position to comment because I make no money on Substack. I do make some money on Medium and most of my stuff are for paid folks. If I ever did start making money on Substack I would probably do what you do and do most of it for free until I found a vehicle that could make decent money. I do not think there is a right or wrong way of doing things, personal preference.
I'm so glad you wrote this, Scott. I've heard the different POVs on this subject, and my gut has been telling me to do exactly what you're suggesting.
Interesting! BTW your Substack game is tight, Chris. You've done some other-level work on your page layout.
Thank you, Scott!

You might be onto something with that theory. Keep pluggin' away!

I don’t have to worry about this quite yet but I appreciated the insights!
keep coming back to this to reassure myself I'm going the right way too
I've been struggling with this same dilemma. It's nice to have my feelings validated. I couldn't agree more.
Glad to hear it, Shannon - and wonderful to see you on here! Subscribed and recommended.
Thank you so much!!!
