1. I Don’t Like This
One thing I don’t like about traditional publishing is that I don’t control the pricing of my books. And these publishers are greedy! They’re always charging the highest possible price for books. Even some of their ebooks are over 10 dollars.
2. It’s Absurd
When I self-publish a book, I can (and usually do) make the book super cheap (like free or 99 cents) for short periods. That way, I can email everyone on my list and tell them to grab the book right now while it’s cheap.
If I didn’t have an email list, I’d blast these micro-sales out to everyone who follows me on social media.
(BTW, if you self-publish books, this is an excellent way to sell a lot of books and get on Amazon’s bestseller lists.)
2. This Has to Change
Alas, with traditionally published books, I was never able to do that.
Until now!
Well, sort of. This week, the publisher of my new book, The Onion Story: How a Band of Misfits, Dropouts, and Sad Sacks Built the World’s Most Trusted News Source, wanted me to tell everyone I knew that the book, currently available for preorder, is on sale for 25% off at the Barnes & Noble website. The sale ends Saturday, July 11, so grab your copy while you can! Get one for a friend too!
And stay tuned for fun giveaways and a launch event for the book when it comes out in October.
You’ll love The Onion Story. It’s the wild ride of my journey from issue #1 of The Onion through to the present day, complete with my hilarious brushes with death, the riotous office antics that nearly got me jailed, and my knee-slapping adventures as a homeless vagrant during The Onion’s starving years.
3. Look What They’re Saying!
“Scott Dikkers is one of American comedy’s superheroes, and The Onion Story is his origin story—hilarious, inspiring, and impossible to put down.”
—Andy Borowitz, New York Times Bestselling Author and Winner of the National Press Club Award for Humor
“The complete story of the glorious rise of The Onion by the man more responsible for it than anyone.”
—David Javerbaum, #1 New York Times bestselling author, 13-time Emmy Winner, and former Onion writer
“You’d expect a memoir by the prime mover of The Onion to be witty, and it is. You’d expect it to be sharply observed, and it is. You wouldn’t necessarily expect The Onion Story to be poignant and personal, but oh, it is—and it’s a revelation.”
—Dean Robbins, Author, Wisconsin Idols
“I devoured this book in one sitting! Scott Dikkers’ story of how he escaped small town hell to help build one of the most enduring comedy brands is fascinating and inspiring.”
—Rich Dahm, Co-Executive Producer of The Colbert Report and The Middle, and former Onion editor
“This is the Onion origin story we’ve been waiting for! Scott has rummaged deep into his memory and done his research to create an engrossing, detailed, and funny book recounting the true origin of this now revered humor institution and the interesting cast of characters around it.”
—Keith Webster, Former Onion Columnist and Cartoonist
A rare deal that ends TODAY? Now you've sent me into a full-blown panic. What happens if my Internet goes down in the next two seconds? What if I lose consciousness from excitement halfway through checkout? I can't live like this, Scott. ;-)
Seriously, though. I'm looking forward to reading the book. And watching the film version, as well.
You had me at “knee-slapping adventures as a homeless vagrant...”
