Another Screenplay

I finished the rough draft of my other screenplay this week. It turned out to be more pages than I thought. It was 35 instead of the 20 I predicted. This means I have to start cutting. The script is 114 pages, and conventional wisdom says that’s too long for a screenplay.

However, news broke this week that a 190-page first-time spec script sold in Hollywood this week. This is unheard-of wackiness. Everybody’s talking about it.

By the way, the reason I’m writing this pen name script is this: It’s a good idea to have two spec screenplays:

One that’s a movie that you really want to see but that doesn’t fit neatly into an existing genre category—it merely serves as a showpiece for your voice. (That’s Patrick Stoodle’s Completely Awesome Army of Killer Robots, which I finished and posted here last week.)

The second that’s a strict genre piece. That’s what my penname script is. The genre is sci-fi action thriller. The subgenre is paranormal/superhero. It’s an adaptation of a novel I wrote 10 years ago. The evidenced 35 pages are below.

Novel

The progress on my new novel (Nothing Civil About It: a farcical saga of the 2nd war between the states (I keep changing that subtitle because I can’t seem to settle on one I like)) was much slower than I’d hoped.

I wanted to finish up the last dozen or so chapters and do a first pass this week, but I barely got through a first pass of chapters one and two.

That’s painful.

I need to turn up the heat. I’ll never get the book done at this rate. Ideally, it would be done now. It’s an alternate history story that starts early November, 2026. Time’s a-wastin’!

I also spent some time getting some feedback on the Patrick’s Robots screenplay. I’m excited to get enough beta-reader notes to improve the shit out of this one.

My goal for the week, which I set in the August 3 post, was to finish the rough draft of my novel and finish the mid-stage revision drafts of two screenplays.

I cleared my schedule and was totally alone all week, which was wonderful. But how did I do?

Novel

I wrote a ton of chapters for Nothing Civil About It, my second-civil-war novel, by far my most ever in a week. I’m not sure how many exactly. Maybe 20, since I wrote well over 20K words, sprinting to the finish.

Technically, I didn’t finish the rough draft of the book, but I feel good about my progress. I got burned out about a dozen chapters from the end. Instead of burning through with terrible vomit drafts of each chapter, I wrote detailed outlines and plan to bang them out this week.

So, for next week, my goal for the novel is to have what Stephen King calls “clean” pages for the whole book (meaning they’re better than a vomit draft—they’re what I call a “rough draft”) and ready for a first-pass edit.

Screenplays

I finished my Patrick Stoodle’s Completely Awesome Army of Killer Robots screenplay—40 pages—and sent it off to my development executive friend for notes yesterday.

As many of those pages as will fit are below.

Sadly, I didn’t finish the other screenplay (a pen-name script about mind-reading teens), but I mapped out the remaining scenes. My goal for next week is to finish it. I only have about 20 pages left.

Screenplay

I bushwhacked through 20 more pages of my Patrick Stoodle’s Completely Awesome Army of Killer Robots screenplay (pages 54 to 73). As many of those pages as will fit are attached below.

I made major headway story-wise on this project (more details on that below) and intend to finish it this week (30 more pages) and send it to my development executive friend for a read.

I also intend to finish my pen-name screenplay this week, which is also about 30 pages from done.

Novel

I only finished two rough chapters of Nothing Civil About It: The true and epic tale of the second war between the states. Those are a mess, but they’re done and they’re attached below.

I also intend to complete this entire novel in the next week. I’m at 29K words right now, which means I’m between a half and a third of the way through. If I write 8K words per day (that’s my target), I’ll finish the novel by this weekend.

How is this possible? More on that in the “Audacious Goals” section below.

Coaching

We had a rousing Writers Room meeting this week. I also conducted two Project Everest group-coaching session, where we heard exciting progress in the novel route from Maisie Hayden, who is a book branding master, and Ian James, who finally cracked open the door to his novel.

We concluded the “Behind the Mic” course this week with two sessions. We talked about voice work and podcasting, and worked through challenges finding a comedic voice.

And we had a monthly accountability meeting this weekend, where we got a ton of inspiring news and developments from a slew of productive subscribers, notably Ken Gullette, who blew up on Substack this week, going super viral with a post. (When you subscribe, you get all these Zoom recordings, transcripts, and dazzling details.)

I met several times and reviewed a ton of material for a private coaching client who’s aiming to get accepted on the staff of a major humor publication. I’ll let you know how that goes when I have the results.

Family Responsibilities

The reason I only wrote two chapters and 20 screenplay pages is that virtually every day in the past week was swallowed by huge family responsibilities: one major life transition and one big adventure—featuring two different family members.

I’ll give you the lowdown below.

I’ll start.

Novel

My focus this week was my alt-history second-US-civil-war novel, Nothing Civil About It. Wrote 7 chapters. Not as many as I wanted, but it’s the most chapters I’ve written in a week so far.

These horribly rough chapters are copied below. I immediately know how to rewrite them as soon as I finish them, but I forge ahead, knowing that tinkering with rough drafts is a fool’s errand until the whole book is drafted.

In general, I’m writing these chapters more carefully that I might otherwise, since I’ve already done my discovery writing, and I don’t want to work too hard when rewriting.

Started thinking about the cover and put together some comps for the designer, pictured above.

Responsibilities

I didn’t write two days this week to attend to family. I’m encouraged by this, because it means I was even more productive than I think. I didn’t write 7 chapters in 7 days. I wrote 7 chapters in 5 days.

Other Books

Worked closely with a designer on covers for my Fantastical Boyhood Adventures of Patrick Stoodle 5-book series. Two of these books are written. The rest are outlined. I plan to finish this series by the end of 2027, along with whatever other books I write in between. These covers—which I’m extremely excited about—are attached below.

Behind the Mic Course

We had two sessions of the “Behind the Mic” course this week. Having great fun working with students on their voice. Some slides from the course are below.

Skit

Here’s my week:

Bad Air

We had apocalyptic air quality here in Minneapolis most of the week, with an AQI topping 500, which is the highest number they have. It was worse than that, but 500 is as high as the numbering system goes.

We didn’t get evacuation orders like they did in Duluth or the Boundary Waters. Still, it was no fun. We used N95 masks to go outside, stayed indoors when possible, and turned on all our air purifiers, which is like fighting a hydrogen bomb with a popgun.

While everyone had sore throats and burning eyes, those in “sensitive groups” had the added misery of aching lungs and stomach upset.

This put me in caretaking mode for much of the week for my “sensitive group” family member.

Good Hands

Today we have a momentary respite. Chicago has it bad, with an AQI of 145 as of this writing.

North America is on fire, with swaths of dangerous wildfire smoke the size of several Alaskas moving across the land.

But it’s all okay because President Trump came on TV Thursday to assure us he has his eye squarely on the top national priority: the stolen election of 2020 that he should have won.

Incidentally, I learned this week that the data they gather to create the AQI numbers come from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a government agency run by Neil Jacobs.

Who is Neil Jacobs?

Appointed by Trump, Jacobs one key qualification for the job: violating NOAA’s code of ethics by issuing a statement in support of Trump’s hand-drawn Sharpie on a weather map that cartoonishly expanded the path of Hurricane Dorian in 2019—the infamous “Sharpiegate.”

We’re in good hands.

Screenplays

I made a huge leap on the pen-name screenplay this week, racking up almost 50 pages. Perhaps inspired by Sylvester Stallone, I wrote all of these pages in one 14-hour writing sprint.

They were fast because I’d gotten past the transition to Act II (always tricky for me) and only had the rest of my novel to adapt from there, with a lot of cutting.

I plan to finish it this week and get it to a story analyst for notes, then post it on some of the script review sites.

The other screenplay, Patrick’s Robots, saw no progress.

Novel

Nothing Civil About It, my alternate-history novel about the second US civil war, was the main creative casualty of our rapidly decaying atmosphere. I wrote only two chapters, and they’re super rough. I’d hoped to burn through a lot more than that. I hope again for progress this week.

Novel

My satirical alternative-history novel about the second US Civil War, Nothing Civil About It, was my main focus.

As per usual, I didn’t get as many chapters done as I wanted, and I’m sure I’ll throw some of these away. I managed to write 5 chapters total, including finishing one that was partially written last week.

I also re-outlined the book.

All of that is below in its raw and rough glory.

I’m zeroing in on the tone of this book and enjoying the process. I’m fleshing out the interwoven plot as I go. I’m in the flight path and looking good.

(BTW, “in the flight path and looking good” is a favorite movie quote of mine. I use it often but no one knows it’s a movie quote. It’s from Die Hard 2. The bad guy (pretending to be an air-traffic controller) says it to the pilot of a packed commercial airliner right before he crashes the plane.)

Screenplay

I made good progress on both the screenplays I’ve got going, advancing 20 pages into Untitled and another 10 in Patrick Stoodle’s Completely Awesome Army of Killer Robots. I also rewrote considerably the start of Act II for the latter, posted last week.

Unrelated Non-Adventure

On Friday I took my boy Charlie (now 18 and out of high school) to our favorite pizza place. We enjoyed our gluten-free pizzas (he also has celiac disease), and when we came back to the car, it had died.

We got an Uber to get him home, and then I decided to walk home from his house, a three-hour journey from Saint Paul to Minneapolis.

It was one of those days that was 90-something degrees and super humid. So, I gave up after about an hour and got an Uber myself for the rest of the way (15 minutes).

My car is still at the pizza place.

Screenplay and Novel

Get ready for a lot of process talk…

My two areas of creative focus this week were the Patrick Stoodle’s Completely Awesome Army of Killer Robots screenplay and the Nothing Civil About It satirical novel. I fell woefully short of my targets for the week on both, which was 10 pages per day on the screenplay plus a chapter a day on the novel.

I also (hilariously) aimed to write 10 pages per day on another screenplay (an adaptation of my first pen-name novel). No progress was made on that one at all. I didn’t even open the Final Draft document all week.

Instead, I merely rewrote 8 pages of the Robots screenplay and barely wrote three new chapters of the novel, one unfinished. This is embarrassing, and that embarrassment motivates me to show up better next week.

What held me back two weeks ago was trouble writing the “plot point 1” scene, as Syd Field calls it. This is the big turn that launches a story into Act II.

Another way to think of this part of a screenplay (which usually happens around page 25) is the hero’s lock-in, or acceptance of the call to adventure, often after Joseph Campbell’s “refusal of the call” step.

I felt like I nailed that part last week

What held me back this week was what comes next, the first “meeting of an ally” scene.

I’ve always had trouble with these scenes. The only way to nail them, in my opinion, is to know the structure so deeply that they pour out. What’s supposed to happen should feel inevitable.

I also watched a few movies this week to study structure: The Wild Robot, A Beautiful Mind, and Collateral.

Watching movies can quickly turn into a morass of procrastination, but I feel good about the time I spent on it. I cracked the story (adapted from my novel draft) and was able to churn out the scenes and feel good about them.

The 8 new screenplay pages are rewritten from the draft I posted last week. And I have a new system for posting pages here where more should show up. Substack is warning me this post “may be truncated in some email clients,” so, for the full content, read this on Substack.

The rest of my time on the screenplay got eaten up outlining. I re-outlined the entire movie (below) using screenwriter Chris Soth’s “mini-movie” method that I’ve used in the past to get through the wasteland of Act II. I also employed Eric Edson’s “23 Hero Goal Sequences.” They’re similar approaches. Edson’s is far more detailed.

Breaking a story is the most important part of writing a screenplay, and it’s always incredibly challenging—especially working alone. The above two resources helped me tremendously, and I feel armed and ready to jump into the new week super productive.

Novel-Writing

I decided to throw out yet more chapters of Nothing Civil About It because I finally cracked the tone I’ve been searching for. All it took was killing one character, and everything fell into place. Below you’ll see the output from the last seven days: one of the old, discarded chapters, plus two new chapters that I think are working.

They’re writing themselves now, and I hope to dramatically scale up the writing from here on in—at least a chapter a day.

Screenwriting

I wrote about four more pages on my Patrick Stoodle’s Completely Awesome Army of Killer Robots screenplay. They’re rough as I work out the story. And they’re below.

My goal is to do 10 pages a day on this script and 10 more pages a day on another script (a pen-name script) until the end of June. I booked a former Hollywood story analyst to read both scripts and give me coverage before I send them to my agent.

Can I keep up with all these writing goals? We shall see.

App-Making

Implemented some fixes, upgrades, and improvements to the Comedy Mastermind app after delivering it to you last week, based on feedback I got (thank you!) and then submitted it to the Apple app stores.

Been using the app, and I love it. It’s like my brain has been made into a computer that I can have conversations with. This is literally what I’ve always wanted my brain to do, but it was always too slow!

Also started working in earnest on another app—a planner. All the planning/scheduling apps I’ve tried are overwhelming and ultimately worthless, so I’m making one that works for me. I’ll let you know how this project goes.

Hello!

This week I finally got into the groove on my new schedule, which I posted about a month ago. And I’m pleased to report that it’s mostly working.

The best thing about the schedule is that it gives me the freedom to flake on things, which really works for me.

It’s set up like this: My Reminders app sends me notifications when I’m supposed to be working on a particular project at a certain hour of the day, like an alarm. The rule is, if I’m dilly-dallying, I have to obey these reminders, but if I’m in the groove on a different project, I can opt to stay in the groove.

This simple innovation seems to have broken through whatever ADHD barrier was preventing me from meeting my productivity goals for a while, and it led to an unusually productive week, at least based on recent averages.

Novel

Completed three chapters of my Nothing Civil About It alternate-history novel about the second US Civil War. They’re copied below.

After scrapping the 11 or so chapters I’d already written, I’m happy with my new direction, though it’s still rough. The previous chapters were in standard limited omniscient voice, and I’m retelling it now in the highly unusual “editorial third-person objective” voice.

Started sketching a cover too, which is always motivating for me to look at while writing.

Also talked to my agent about this book, and he’s eager to send it to publishers. Somehow, telling him about it makes it more real. I decided this book would be best published traditionally. We’ll see how that goes.

Screenplay

Wrote about 10-20 new pages of my Patrick Stoodle’s Completely Awesome Army of Killer Robots screenplay. Sadly, this didn’t add new pages to my overall progress, since most of the pages were rewrites as I make further changes, adapting it from my novel draft.

Six of these pages of are attached below (any more and Substack gives me a warning that I’m over the space limit. I like when this happens, because one of my top productivity goals is to write so much that it doesn’t fit in these updates.)

Cracked the story and tone for one of my novels in progress (Nothing Civil About It), wrote a bunch of outline notes, scrapped the chapters I’d written previously, and wrote a preface. All of that, messy as it is, is below. No new writing on my other novel.

Screenplays

Put my penname screenplay on hold and focused on rewriting the Patrick Stoodle’s Completely Awesome Army of Killer Robots screenplay and got 30 or 40 pages in. As many pages as I can fit are below (which is 10, it turns out).

Also signed up for a bunch of screenplay feedback groups to get more eyes on my scripts. Storypeer and Scripthive (via Discord) are the best I’ve found so far. Thanks to Brandi (subscriber) for the Storypeer recommendation.

App

My Comedy Genius app continues to bury me in technology, but I made big strides this week, working on it almost every day. Switched some of the tools I’m using. I’m learning a lot about making apps, and now I want to make more apps after this one, god help me.

I had a few FunnyCon-related meetings, meetings with David Uribe about an effort we’re partnering on, a fun Writers Room meeting this weekend, and a couple of coaching sessions during the week.

Nonsense

Lost a day to a family obligation, which included some hours of driving. I rarely show up to family functions. My family understands that I don’t like to leave my house, and they forgive my years-long absences.
