I see this guy on the Internet from time to time. If you’re an older male, maybe you’ve seen him too. He advertises things like chair yoga and “fit over 50” products and such.
Exercising like he does takes time. I resent it. When I can, I try to workout. But I fall off the bandwagon a lot.
At the same time, I haven’t slowed down like other people my age (59). I’m fit. I still sprint, do gymnastics, and all the same stuff I did when I was a teen. I feel healthier than I ever have.
And I stay productive with all my creative work, too. How do I do it all, you ask?
Here’s my “secret hack” for staying healthy when I don’t have time:
My apartment is on the fifth floor. I never take the elevator. When I travel, I don’t roll my bags. I carry them. I don’t stand on escalators. When I’m walking, sometimes I run. Sometimes I jump over things. I climb trees, buildings, and cliffs.
That’s it. Exercise is baked into my life. It’s gamified. Even when I don’t have time, I’m still exercising.
Also, I only eat vegetables, healthy fats, and pasture-raised organic meats. Every few days, I treat myself to a small piece of fruit.
I’ve been living like this for years. Try it for a month and let me know how you feel. I guarantee you won’t feel 59.
Nice Post Scott. I think there is a lot to be said for what you are doing.
Wearing my doctor hat and being a purveyor of unsolicited ( but free) medical advice I always encourage middle aged people to do a little weightlifting every week.
The reason being is that evidence suggests will help avoid frailty when you get to your 70's, 80's and beyond, when getting in and out of a chair and bed become more difficult
That's so true it's not funny!
